McCarthy Continuing Aggressive Effort to Create Jobs & Opportunity for Long Island's Workforce With May 17 Event

Press Release

Date: May 11, 2011
Location: Garden City, NY

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY04) is continuing her efforts to create jobs and opportunity for Long Island's workforce with a panel of local officials on May 17 who will tell residents of her district about ways they can get training to start new careers.

This will be the third event held by Rep. McCarthy this year to help reduce local entrepreneurs' tax burden, help local small businesses grow, and fight unemployment on Long Island. In March, Rep. McCarthy held a forum explaining small business tax cuts that she helped pass during the 111th Congress. In April, she hosted the U.S. Export-Import Bank in an event that helped small businesses learn how to grow by exporting their goods and services to a global market.

"Despite optimistic economic trends, many Long Islanders are still struggling to find well-paying jobs and make ends meet," Rep. McCarthy said. "There are a lot of resources available locally to help people improve their situations, and it's a priority for me to bring that information to my constituents. While the economy continues to slowly improve, we must remain aggressive in the fight to help Long Islanders get jobs and improve their economic situation."

The event will take place at the Westbury Public Library (445 Jefferson St.) on Tuesday, May 17 at 9:15 a.m. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor and HempsteadWorks will be on hand to talk about current job trends and what to expect if you are looking for a new job or considering a career change. In addition, Adelphi University, Hofstra University and Nassau Community College will each talk about various job training programs and certificate programs available through their institutions.

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP by calling Rep. McCarthy's district office at (516) 739-3008 or emailing jessica.montgomery@mail.house.gov. This event is free and open to the public.
