Pelosi Statement on Jewish American Heritage Month

Statement

Date: April 29, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month, which begins on Sunday, May 1:

"Jewish American Heritage Month offers us an opportunity to honor a community that has helped shape, strengthen, and enrich our nation. Arriving from corners of prejudice -- escaping the shadows of anti-Semitism and causeless hatred -- Jews found on our shores the promise of hope, the freedom to worship and practice their faith without fear, a place that gives "bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.'

"Throughout our history, the Jewish community's contributions have reinforced and sustained the moral fabric of our country, bolstered our economy, and enhanced our culture. Jewish Americans have met with success in every field -- blazing trails in law and academia; discovering medical cures and vaccines; advancing scientific research and innovation; driving our progress through public service.

"Nearly every facet of American life bears the mark of Jewish values: to pursue justice and peace; to serve our neighbors and those in need; to seek the common good and to perfect our union and our world.

"In this Jewish American Heritage Month, may we all take stock of these values, honor the acts and achievements of the Jewish community, and rededicate ourselves to the ideals at the center of our national success: pluralism, diversity, and religious liberty for all."
