Sen. Carper Statement on April Jobs Report

Statement

Date: May 6, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement regarding April employment figures released today:

"Today's April jobs report delivered the strongest month of private sector job creation in five years. It's good news, and further proof that the recovery from the worst economic downturn in my lifetime is taking hold. I'm also hopeful with these encouraging numbers, employers are gaining the confidence they need to accelerate hiring in the months ahead. This type of monthly job creation is what we'll need to put thousands of Delawareans and millions of Americans back to work.

"We also need a strong manufacturing sector to help lead our nation to economic prosperity. Manufacturing has expanded in 21 consecutive months, and there is evidence of that right here in the First State. Just today, I joined leaders and employees of Johnson Controls Inc. in Middletown to celebrate the company's expansions, which will bring scores of jobs to the community.

"Having said that, the unemployment rate remains stubbornly high, and we must remember that there is still more work to do. As I've said time and time again, Congress and the Obama Administration must continue to provide a nurturing environment for job creation, giving businesses the certainty and predictability they need to expand and invest in a world class American work force."
