PORKER OF THE WEEK AWARD

(Washington, DC - August 4, 2004) "The federal government is beginning to resemble an Avis or Hertz rental car company as it builds a bloated fleet of vehicles that exceeds demand.

A new federal audit uncovered millions of wasted dollars due to poor management of government-owned vehicles and aircraft. The report highlighted one case in which a car had simply been parked behind a Department of Veterans Affairs laundry facility since it was purchased four years ago. The Inspector General of the Department of the Interior estimated annual savings of $34 million if the department eliminated some of its 36,000 underutilized and unneeded vehicles.

Government agencies spend about $1.7 billion a year to manage a fleet of nearly 400,000 vehicles. There are plenty of American families that are unable to afford their own car
