Congresswoman Laura Richardson (CA-37) Mindful of Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill as Earth Day Approaches

Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Oil and Gas

Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson (CA-37) released the following statement reflecting on the one year anniversary of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the upcoming 41st anniversary of Earth Day:

"One year ago this week, America faced the worst environmental disaster in our nation's history, as more than 150 million gallons of crude oil from the Deepwater Horizon rig spread across the Gulf of Mexico. The devastating spill wreaked havoc on delicate ecosystems and an already tough economy, the effects of which are still being felt to this day.

"In the spirit of Earth Day this week, it is only appropriate that while we celebrate the progress being made in the Gulf, we remain mindful of the work that lies ahead. Some of this work needs to be done on the ground, as scientists and environmental groups lead ecosystem restoration efforts. But there is also much work to be done in Congress to improve our response efforts to future spills, head off potential environmental threats before they occur and further invest in more environmentally friendly energy sources.

"After touring the Gulf during cleanup efforts last year, I heard firsthand from responders and government officials who discussed the challenges they encountered coordinating their efforts. In response, I authored the Securing Health for Ocean Resources and Environment Act, which will enhance communication, preparedness, and response to oil spills by better defining coordination between federal and state response activities and investing in research to find more efficient means of response.

"Unlike the Republican bills that focus on drilling at all costs without regard for vital safeguards, the SHORE Act is exactly the type of legislation needed most right now. I will be reintroducing it shortly, and I implore my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support these crucial measures. This Earth Day, instead of increasing the likelihood of a future oil spill, let us be responsible stewards of the environment by taking the necessary steps to protect our oceans and shores for future generations."
