McIntyre Advocates for North Carolina Fishermen

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Environment

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre is standing up for North Carolina fishermen by urging congressional hearings on the draconian fishing closures being implemented by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Congressman McIntyre stated, "Our fishermen do not need to have their hands tied behind they back as they seek to earn a living and support their families. It is important that a congressional hearing take place so the facts of these closures can be debated. Our fishermen deserve the freedom to fish!"

McIntyre continued, "There has been an effort by certain groups to exploit provisions in the Magnusson-Stevens Act in order to bring fishing to a halt in many parts of the country. Congress never intended this law to be abused to impose an ideological agenda driven by fishery closures. Fishery management should be based on sound and robust science and needs to include the input of fishermen!"

McIntyre has joined his colleagues in asking the House Natural Resources Committee to hold a hearing on this and the law that governs the management of fisheries.
