Politico - Representative Gosar on Spending Cuts

Op-Ed

Date: April 5, 2011

By: Paul Gosar

It is time for bureaucrats in Washington to start telling the truth. Washington is spending more money than it has and if it refuses to make any concrete changes, our debt will continue to skyrocket. Our future generations will not have the same opportunity to pursue the American dream because they will be indebted to the federal government for today's fiscal irresponsibility.

If Washington continues to turn its back on the American people and do nothing, as some suggest, federal income taxes alone would have to increase to over 60% for most taxpayers to balance the budget. This is unacceptable and would lead to a financial catastrophe.

Making budget cuts are never easy. I'm a small businessman and health care provider- I know what it is like to have to make tough choices and live within a budget. But I don't need to tell the American people that - for years the people of my district have been making sacrifice after sacrifice in order to pay their bills and do more with less. It is time that Washington get with the program and start talking about what it can and can't afford. Our children and grandchildren are depending on us to stop this fiscal crisis before it grows any larger.
