Capito, McKinley Already Voted To Not Take Pay During Government Shutdown

Press Release

Location: Washington, D.C

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va. and Rep. David B. McKinley, P.E.R-W.Va., voted last week to forgo any pay during a shutdown of the federal government. The House passed H.R. 1255, but the Senate has refused to take it up with a government shutdown hours away.

If the Senate chooses not to act and Members of Congress do receive pay, Capito and McKinley will send their pay during any shutdown to the Bureau of Public Debt in Parkersburg to help pay down the debt.

"The Senate has had an opportunity to vote for H.R. 1255 and forgo their pay during any potential shutdown. They have chosen not to do so. Why won't the Senate join us and vote to remove their pay? A pledge is one thing, but our vote is our voice. Most importantly, we ask the Senate to join us in preventing a government shutdown," stated Capito.

"Congresswoman Capito and I have both voted repeatedly to avoid a government shutdown -- but the Senate has failed to do its job," McKinley said. "We even voted last week to refuse our own pay should one occur -- but the Senate refused to take up that measure, as well. If the Senate continues not to act and a shutdown does occur, we will send any congressional pay we receive during the shutdown to the Bureau of Public Debt in Parkersburg to make it clear that we don't want a shutdown and don't want more debt. Unfortunately, the Senate appears to want both a government shutdown and more debt."
