Reed Votes In Favor of 2011 Spending Resolution to Reduce Spending and Keep Government Open

Statement

Date: April 11, 2011

Congressman Tom Reed expressed hope that his vote in the wee hours of Saturday morning to keep the federal government open is a first step toward substantial budget cuts. The vote keeps the government operational while upholding the Republican Majority's commitment to an open and transparent process by posting the final legislative agreement online. This agreement calls for $38.5 billion in immediate spending cuts, over four times larger than any single funding cut in U.S. history.

"This deal was necessary to get the drops out of the way so we can begin dealing with the entire bucket," Reed said. "It moves us onto Budget Chairman Paul Ryan's 'Path to Prosperity' and the 2012 budget where we can no longer pretend we aren't going bankrupt."

"While this agreement means real savings for taxpayers, we need to go much further to cure our nation's spending-driven debt crisis and move on from cutting billions of dollars to cutting trillions of dollars. I hope that this agreement is the first step toward recognizing that we can no longer ignore our $14.3 trillion debt," Reed concluded.
