Congressman Long: Support the Troops

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Billy Long blasted the Obama White House and Senate Democratic Leadership for their failure to pass H.R.1, which would support funding the government through fiscal year 2011, and their threats to block all legislation that would fund the United States military in lieu of a shutdown. It has been 47 days since House Republicans passed H.R.1, which would keep the entire government running through the end of this fiscal year.

"President Obama and Senator Reid would rather defend planned parenthood instead of our men and women in the military," said Long. "We have the finest military in the world and to turn our backs on them is unpatriotic and unacceptable. Perhaps Obama and Reid think our fighting men and women should be used as pawns in a game of government shutdown chicken, but I don't."

Today, Long voted to support a troop-funding bill that would guarantee our troops would be paid through the rest of the fiscal year and would extend the budget resolution that funds the entire government by another week. Despite this, both Senator Reid and President Obama have publicly stated that they will not support the bill.

"Instead of cheerleading for a government shutdown for political gain, the Senate and the White House need to get serious about cutting spending," said Long. "We can't keep spending 42% more than we take in every year. Families in southwest Missouri can't spend 42% more than they make year in year out and neither can Washington."
