Broun Statement on FY 2011 Spending Bill

Statement

Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today released the following statement after voting against the FY 2011 spending agreement:

"While I am glad our Leadership was able to craft an agreement with Senate Democrats that cut spending and averted a government shutdown, the FY 2011 spending deal is still not the strong first step we need in confronting America's economic emergency. In fact, in the two weeks that it took to negotiate the less than $39 billion final deal, we accumulated more than $54 billion in new debt. Unless we get serious about the severity of our fiscal crisis, we're just taking one step forward and two steps back.

"Any budget proposal we make moving forward must drastically prune back the overgrowth of the federal government. In fact, I would suggest to President Obama that a machete is exactly what we need right now, as we are way past the time a scalpel is of any effective use. Washington needs to prioritize what we absolutely must spend money on and remove funding for what we don't; otherwise our spending habits will only spiral further out of control. In the meantime, I cannot support a bill that contains so much less than our initial compromise of $61 billion in cuts. Every move we make this Congress will have an impact on the long-term viability of our nation, which is why I will continue to fight for fiscal sanity and constitutionally limited government in Washington."
