Congressman Ranacci Votes to Support Our Troops and Cut $40 Billion in Spending

Statement

Today, Congressman Jim Renacci (OH-16) voted in support of H.R. 1473, a bill that will fund the Department of Defense and other federal agencies through the end of the fiscal year. The bill, which passed the House by a vote of 260 -- 167, includes a gross spending cut of nearly $40 billion, the largest non-defense spending cut in history. Congressman Renacci released the following statement in response to the bill's passage in the House:

"When I was elected just a few months ago, I vowed to fight for spending cuts, pro-jobs policies and to reduce the size and scope of our federal government. While there is still much to do to cure our nation's spending-driven debt crisis, the passage of this bill represents a historic blow to the culture of spending in Washington. Over the past several weeks, I have voted time after time to keep our government operating, keep our men and women in uniform receiving their paychecks, and to make serious spending reductions. We did not get into our fiscal crisis overnight, and it will take time for us to recover. But make no mistake, the debate in Washington has shifted from one over how much we can spend to how much we can cut--it's a dramatic change from the last Congress and we are finally moving in the right direction. As we debate the fiscal year 2012 budget in the coming days, I will shift my focus from saving billions of dollars to trillions of dollars as I work to help get our nation back on a path to prosperity."

In addition to its historic spending cut, H.R. 1473 also provides $513 billion for the Department of Defense, providing our troops with the resources they need to succeed in their missions at home and abroad. It also subjects the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to yearly audits, bans the taxpayer funding of abortion in the District of Columbia, and provides new tools and accountability mechanisms in the fight to repeal ObamaCare.
