Blog: Removing Automatic Funding for ObamaCare

Location: Unknown

Dear Friends: Tucked within the 2,700 page health care law enacted last year was $105.5 billion in automatic appropriations to exempt the large parts of the law from the annual appropriations process. This week, I joined with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) to remove that funding and to subject the law to the congressional oversight it deserves.

Whether or not you support the health law, we should not tie the hands of those elected to represent the people. Funding for ObamaCare should be subject to the same process as the military, farmers, teachers, medical research and the whole host of government programs. It is good government and common sense.

Our proposal would remove all future appropriations and subject any funding to the appropriations process as defined by Article I, Section 7 of the United States Constitution. It also cancels planned transfers within government accounts and rescinds unobligated balances for the current and past fiscal year.

It is our hope that this legislation will provide another tool to combat ObamaCare. So far, I have voted to repeal it and for it to be replaced with reforms that bring down the cost of care without growing government. I voted separately to defund the law and for a bill, which I cosponsored, to prevent the devastating 1099 requirement.

Some have described ObamaCare as being like kudzu. Having grown up around it, I know how to fight kudzu and that's on every front. I'll continue my efforts and look forward to swift passage of this important legislation.
