Southerland Announces Opposition to Budget Compromise

Statement

Date: April 12, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Steve Southerland, II issued the following statement today expressing his opposition to this week's $38.5 billion FY2011 spending compromise:

"I appreciate the efforts of Speaker Boehner to negotiate the best agreement he thought possible with a Senate Democrat leadership that had abdicated its Constitutional responsibility to pass a budget at every turn. However, I am unable to support this week's FY2011 spending compromise because it falls short of our promise to the American people and does not fully address the crushing burden of deficits and debt that we are leaving our children.

"How we handle this burgeoning fiscal crisis will be viewed by generations to come as the defining domestic test of our time. We must listen to the hardworking men and women who are demanding that we think big and cut bigger. Decisive and necessary reductions in spending must not be derailed by those who believe that token measures can avoid an inevitable fiscal crisis like those seen in Europe. Now is the time for visionary leadership that will secure a brighter future for every American."
