Southerland Denounces President's Budget Do-Over

Statement

Date: April 13, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Steve Southerland, II issued the following statement today in response to President Obama's request for a do-over on fiscal responsibility:

"I applaud President Obama for acknowledging Washington's spending problem, but it is difficult to take his overtures seriously when he continues digging the hole deeper. Doubling down on a failed agenda of bigger government and job-killing tax increases will only force us further down the path of economic peril.

"The President's rush to hit the reset button on fiscal restraint appears to be based exclusively on political opportunism, rather than legitimate economic policy. After ushering in an era of seemingly endless trillion dollar deficits, the President chose to ignore the burgeoning fiscal crisis in his FY2012 budget proposal. The President failed miserably when he tried to convince the American people that we could spend our way to economic growth, and I have no doubt that his goal of taxing our way to prosperity will inevitably meet the same miserable fate."
