Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., today issued the following statement in response to President Obama's speech this afternoon delineating his deficit reduction plan:
"The president outlined proposals that I believe we can build upon. We need fair spending cuts that don't place the burden on working families. We need to invest in public education because it will strengthen our economy. And we need to stop spending billions of dollars on tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. But I am concerned about which programs will be affected in order to reach the $4 trillion in deficit reduction. I look forward to further details and to a frank and productive discussion about the fair steps we can take to responsibly get our deficit under control, and secure a strong future for our country."
