Rep. Howard Berman Calls On Republicans to Put Aside Extreme Agenda to Avoid Government Shutdown

Statement

Date: April 8, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Howard Berman (CA-28) released the following statement expressing his opposition to a government shutdown and urging Republicans to put aside their extreme agenda in favor of finding common ground.

"A shutdown could delay tax refunds, put tens of thousands of Californians temporarily out of work, and seriously damage our tourist industry which could result in the loss of millions of dollars in revenue. This all adds up to the fact that a shutdown is not only disruptive and a waste of taxpayer dollars, but it could have a very negative impact on our already fragile economy.

"I know there is room for a reasonable, fiscally responsible compromise that could prevent a government shutdown. It is frustrating that the Republicans in Congress are choosing to ignore this common ground in favor of slavish devotion to an agenda that eliminates environmental safeguards, ends reproductive health care services for women, and defunds public broadcasting."
