This week, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) is celebrating National Library Week by highlighting some of the exciting programs and events coming up at the Sacramento Public Library, including today's launch of their eReader program.
"The Sacramento Public Library continues to establish itself as a leader in the region, and as a model for other systems," said Congresswoman Matsui. "This is evident with the launch of their new eReader program, which will help make books more accessible to the public and enhance the educational resources of our region."
The eReader program, which received federal funding through a grant from the Library Services and Technology Act, will allow every branch of the library to loan out preloaded Nook devices through a partnership between the Sacramento Public Library and Barnes and Noble. Not only will the program enhance the services the Library provides its patrons, it will also establish the Sacramento Public Library as a model for other California libraries as they move forward to develop their own eReader services.
"Additionally, the fact that the Sacramento Public Library has been chosen by the Smithsonian Institution as the first stop to launch their exhibit American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music shows just how high-profile our library system has become. I applaud the creativity, innovation and leadership that the Sacramento Public Library continues to display, and honor their work during this National Library Week."
American Sabor will explore the musical contributions of American Latinos from the 1940s to the present, and will be on display in Sacramento from May 25th to August 7th, 2011. Developed by the Experience Music Project and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), American Sabor will travel to 12 cities over the next four years, with support from the Ford Motor Fund.
Sacramento Public Library Director Rivkah K. Sass added, "Acting as both community centers and information hubs, public libraries are places for everyone to learn and grow. Sacramento Public Library is proud to offer dynamic programs and services that educate, enlighten and enrich our patrons, and is especially grateful for the support of our Congresswoman Doris Matsui, who has been a champion for our libraries and all that they bring to the communities they serve. National Library Week is the opportunity to remind everyone that libraries matter and that we are here to serve you."
