Rep. Murphy Statement on Budget Agreement

Statement

Date: April 9, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Following tonight's vote on a temporary spending bill, Congressman Tim Murphy (PA-18) released the following statement:

"The struggles of the budget negotiations have been worth the results. Through this difficult process we've achieved an agreement on the largest spending cut in history, totaling $38.5 billion. And with this stopgap measure, we can finalize a yearlong spending bill with substantial cuts and without shutting down the government to do so. I am heartened that we won't disappoint our military families who serve in defense of this nation. While every soldier would have been paid in a shutdown scenario, a budget stalemate carries real consequences for their families because military pay would be interrupted during an impasse.

"The reason the yearlong bill was not ready for a vote this evening is because a substantial spending reduction plan was met with resistance in the Senate and the White House. The importance of making spending reductions for the current fiscal year is a significant point to emphasize. The road to fiscal recovery starts with a spending bill for this year at an amount that can serve as a baseline for future budgets. If our country is to get on a sustainable path, it is essential that Congress makes the difficult decisions by enacting spending cuts today. We didn't get into this crisis overnight, and we will not get out of it overnight. This is the right step in a direction of cutting hundreds of billions of dollars from the federal budget over the next decade."
