McKinley Votes to Protect our Troops and Avoid a Government Shutdown

Press Release

Date: April 7, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Thursday, Rep. David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-WV) voted in favor of H.R. 1363, the Department of Defense and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011. The bill would appropriate funding for the Department of Defense through the FY2011 while cutting $12 billion in spending throughout the next week. After his vote to protect our troops and avoid a government shutdown, Rep. McKinley issued the following statement:

"Unfortunately, we are on the precipice of a shutdown because the previous Congress failed to pass a budget and the Senate has refused to act. Throughout this process, my goals have been to keep the government running and reduce spending. We must also protect our troops and give them the funding they need to defend our country safely, and we cannot let politics hold them hostage. That's why we voted today to fund the Department of Defense through the end of this fiscal year while cutting more non-military spending. I wish President Obama and the Senate would come to the table in good faith so we can protect our troops, keep the government open and make responsible spending cuts."
