Duffy Votes to Fund Troops, Keep Government Running and Cut Spending

Statement

Date: April 7, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S.Congressman Sean Duffy (WI-07), a member of the Financial Services Committee and the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement today after voting for the short-term continuing resolution to prevent the federal government from shutting down, fund our troops, and cut an additional $12 billion in government spending:

"Once again, the House is leading where the Senate and White House are either unwilling or unable to. Once again, the House has passed another continuing resolution to keep the federal government from shutting down while we have yet to see a single proposal from the Senate. Once again, this House has come together in an attempt to fix a budget mess left by the Democrat majority in the previous Congress who failed to pass or even propose a budget.

"This commonsense resolution not only prevents a government shutdown, it cuts an additional $12 billion, and it also ensures that our troops have the resources they need to get the job done and get home safe. Frankly, it is inconceivable that the federal government is on the verge of shutting down because there are some in Washington who refuse to support a modest step in the direction of restoring fiscal sanity.

"By reining in the size and scope of the federal government, we remove barriers to economic growth and job creation. This nation has much larger issues looming and it is my hope that the Senate will join the House in our attempt to put our fiscal house in order and chart a course to security, prosperity and a renewed American Dream."

BACKGROUND:

The House has already passed two bills that would keep the entire government running through the end of this fiscal year and cut $61 billion in job destroying spending. (H.R. 1, passed February 19th and H.R. 1255, passed April 1st). It has been 47 days since the House passed the first bill to keep the entire government running through the end of this fiscal year, but 47 days later the Senate has yet to pass any bill to keep the entire government running through the end of the fiscal year.

H.R. 1363 is the third bill out of the House to fund the Department of Defense through the end of the fiscal year.

The House has also already passed a measure that would not allow Members of Congress to be paid during a government shutdown (H.R. 1255)
