Reed Votes to Fund Troops for Duration of Fiscal Year 2011 and Keep Government Running

Congressman Tom Reed voted today for H.R. 1363, the Department of Defense and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011, which funds American troops for the rest of the fiscal year and keeps the government running for one week with an additional $12 billion in cuts.

This is the fourth effort by the House to keep the government running while making substantial spending cuts spur job creation. The Senate has yet to come forward with a plan.

"While this is not the optimal situation, we can at the very least guarantee funding for our troops," Reed said. "It will also fund our government for an additional week so that the House and Senate can agree on a budget for the rest of the fiscal year. It is my hope that the President and the Senate will finally show some leadership on this issue so that we may move forward and deal with real issues like job creation."

Without Senate passage and Presidential support of this bill, the government will shut down Friday at midnight.

"We do not want a government shutdown," Reed said. "The House has been working tirelessly to make substantial budget cuts and keep the government running. While the President and Senate leadership may be satisfied with the status quo, we in the House are not. The truth remains that we are broke, and I am fighting for major cuts to get our economy growing again."
