Congressman Cantor Statement on Republican Efforts to Address Skyrocketing Gas Prices

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Eric Cantor (VA-07) today issued the following statement on the job-creating energy bills introduced by the House Natural Resources Committee. These bills would put an end to the Administration's de facto moratorium on Gulf of Mexico drilling; permit the oil and natural gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and off the shores of Virginia that have been delayed or cancelled; and reverse the ban on new offshore drilling:

"As our country climbs back from the economic downturn, far too many people remain out of work and gas prices continue to skyrocket putting added strain on family budgets. In response to the Obama Administration's aggressive fight against domestic energy production, today, House Republicans have taken another important step to encourage economic growth, create jobs and lower gas prices through the introduction of three bills from the Natural Resources Committee. In addition to Resources' legislation, I expect to schedule Energy and Commerce's bill prohibiting the EPA's job-destroying and anti-energy regulations on greenhouse gas emissions from going into effect. Combined, these efforts by the Energy and Commerce Committee and Resources Committee represent tangible efforts by House Republicans to reduce the cost of energy and increase jobs in America. These commonsense measures will take needed steps to begin to solve the energy challenges facing our country and reduce gas and energy prices by encouraging domestic production.

"Exploring all domestic energy resources are essential, and that includes energy development in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Virginia. The safe exploration and extraction of domestic resources can help create American jobs, generate millions of dollars in needed revenue, and reduce our reliance on foreign oil so that gas prices are lower for families and businesses. I hope Congress and the White House can work together on these measures that will provide a much-needed economic boost and relieve the pain at the pump for consumers nationwide."
