Surviving the Body Blow?

Statement

Date: April 6, 2011
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Earlier today, I participated in a House Armed Services Committee hearing and received testimony related to funding for the U.S. Pacific Command and U.S. Forces Korea. At the hearing, I also had the opportunity to question Admiral Robert F. Willard, Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, and inquire as to our ability to sustain a long-term, overseas conflict in the Western Pacific. I asked Admiral Willard if the United States would be able to survive a "body blow' from a nation like China, which is aggressively pursuing military modernization with the intention of rivaling the United States.
