U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) today praised the agreement to invest $461 million in North Carolina high-speed rail. TheU.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), Norfolk Southern Railway, North Carolina Railroad and Amtrak signed a cooperative agreement for North Carolina to begin work on key passenger rail improvement projects. The funds are a part of the $545 million in high-speed rail investments that Hagan fought for North Carolina to receive through the Recovery Act.
"It is great news that North Carolina and the USDOT are ready to begin work on these critical high-speed rail projects that will create jobs, improve rail travel for North Carolinians and make our state an even better place to live and do business," said Hagan. "Earlier this month I invited Secretary Ray LaHood to Charlotte for a meeting with North Carolina business and transportation leaders and to discuss key transportation projects in our state, and we talked about how investment in high-speed rail will benefit our state into the future. I will continue to work with Secretary LaHood and NCDOT toadvance important transportation projects in North Carolina."
