Today U.S. Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) voted in favor of H.R. 1076, a bill to prohibit Federal funding of National Public Radio and the use of Federal funds to acquire radio content. The bill would prohibit public radio stations from using federal funds to purchase programming and from using federal funds to pay NPR dues. The legislation also prohibits direct federal funding of NPR. H. R. 1076 passed on a vote of 228-192.

"Taxpayers' dollars are being terribly mismanaged by public radio," said Jones. "I fully believe NPR is capable of making it in the free market without assistance from taxpayers."

NPR currently receives direct Federal funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the Department of Education, the Department of Commerce, and the National Endowment for the Arts. NPR also gets a considerable amount of money from local radio stations through the payment of dues and content purchases.
