Energy Appropriator Fattah Supports Safety Review on Path to Nuclear Expansion

Statement

Date: March 20, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), member of the House Appropriations Committee's subcommittee on energy and water, and co-chair of the Congressional Urban Caucus, issues the following statement:

"The safety review ordered by President Obama for U.S. nuclear facilities is a necessary step in light of the nuclear calamity that has struck Japan following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. As an energy appropriator I believe we must move forward, for the future of our economy and national security, to promote clean energy and nuclear technologies. To continue on this path, I will work to assure that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has all the resources it needs to conduct this safety review and to oversee our modern nuclear industry.

"As House sponsor of the Clean Energy Act of 2010, in partnership with Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), I am a strong proponent of nuclear energy to help ensure adequate supplies of electricity for all. But we must employ the highest level of technology to assure that we are proceeding safely and carefully. The experience at Fukushima is a cautionary lesson. Nuclear energy remains an opportunity."
