Location: Washington, DC

Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) released the following statement to commemorate the 40thanniversary of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC):

"This month marks the 40thanniversary of the founding of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). As a proud member and immediate past chair of the CBC, I salute the bold and principled leadership of our members as we work for a more perfect union.

"The CBC continues to lead in the fight for equality of opportunity and peace. It has held true to its original mission, "to positively influence the course of events pertinent to African Americans and others of similar experience and situation.'

"The founding class of the CBC holds a special significance for me. Two of my heroes, the Honorable Ron Dellums and the Honorable Shirley Chisholm, were members of that inaugural class which set the bar high for every CBC class that has followed. I am fortunate enough to hold the same Congressional seat that Ron Dellums held, and I worked on Shirley Chisholm's historic Presidential campaign. Their passion and sense of justice remind me of why the CBC continues to be known as the "Conscience of the Congress.'

"I applaud the leadership of Chairman Cleaver as he guides the CBC into its 41styear and join my CBC colleagues as we celebrate our Caucus' rich tradition and heritage."
