Langevin Celebrates Read Across America Week in Warwick

Press Release

Date: March 4, 2011
Location: Warwick, RI
Issues: Education

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) visited with fourth and fifth grade classes in Warwick today to take part in Read Across America Week, a celebration of the invaluable contributions of Ted Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, to children's education. Langevin took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of reading in "the family setting" as vital to a young student's success and to encourage the students to pursue their dreams. Making stops at Harold F. Scott school and John Brown Francis Elementary School, he read House Mouse, Senate Mouse, a children's book about the basic structure of our government and how law are made.

Langevin will offer a similar message to kids and their families tomorrow at 1:15 at the Warwick Mall when he reads aloud as part of the National Education Association of Rhode Island's Read Across America event.

"I want our students to know that if they work hard and value education, they can achieve great things," said Langevin. "The importance of reading skills is indisputable and our leaders have a responsibility to promote reading to children and their families. Read Across America is a perfect opportunity to do just that. I thank the Scott School, Francis Elementary School and NEA Rhode Island for inviting me to share this message and discuss the importance of providing everyone with a quality education."

"Life's full of challenges and difficulties, but everybody has them and everyone can get through them," Langevin told the students at Francis Elementary. "When you face difficulties, especially when it comes to career or job, your education is so important. It's one thing no one can take away from you. You've earned it."
