Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today after H.R. 662, the Surface Transportation Extension Act of 2011, cleared the House. H.R. 662 would freeze funding for highway projects at 2010 spending levels through September 30th, the end of Fiscal Year 2011:

"Yet again, this Congress is cleaning up after last year's Lame Duck Congress. The 111th Congress failed to pass a complete highway and transit program for this fiscal year. Today, the House passed a bill, just days before the programs were set to expire, which is a clean, straight extension of current law and prevents additional spending increases. Normally, a new Congress would not deal with this type of legislation until summer. However, because of the Pelosi-led Congress' dereliction of duty, we had to take emergency action. Now the Senate must act.

"The impact of a shutdown of Highway Trust Fund programs is immediate and severe for both businesses and states. Without an extension, many jobs could be lost throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia."
