McCotter Official Statement on the Resignation of Egyptian President Mubarak

Statement

Date: Feb. 11, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

In response to the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, U.S. Representative Thaddeus G. McCotter has released the following statement:

"The change, ordered by President Mubarak, from an autocrat's rule to a military dictatorship is a dubious step in Egypt's "march toward democracy.' Precedents suggest that this move may well devolve into a return to the anarchy of the 1950's, with the added danger now of an aggressive Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan) working off camera for the occasion to usurp power. I call on the illegitimate military junta to respect the Egyptian Constitution; and recognize the Speaker of the Parliament's legitimate authority to lead a peaceful transition to a true constitutional republic."
