President Barack Obama's Fiscal Year 2012 budget, which nearly doubles the size of government from when he took office, does the opposite of what Americans were calling for: Less debt and more jobs, said U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, MI-02.

"It's clear the President wasn't listening to the American people when he wrote this budget. It raises massive taxes on Americans and businesses to pay for skyrocketing spending. As was said during the State of the Union, we must begin to change the trajectory of spending in Washington, and begin to live within our means, so that we can provide for future generations as well as our own. This budget does not do that. Even the President admits his own budget doesn't go far enough to address deficit-reduction, and that after 10 years would again quickly drive deficits to unsustainable heights."

Huizenga said that a more acceptable budget plan would focus on reforming spending in the short, intermediate, and long-term. "In the short term we must cut spending immediately, making some tough decisions now so we don't have to make even more painful ones later. The Continuing Resolution offered by Republicans this week is a good first step toward this. In the intermediate term, we need to evaluate outcomes, keeping only the most effective programs, and institute new planning and priorities in our budgeting process. This will begin in the spring, when Republicans offer their own alternative budget that truly address our fiscal problems. In the long term, we must begin to have an open and honest conversation about how to tackle the unchecked expansion of entitlements," Huizenga said.
