Welcome to my blog! I hope to use this as another way to communicate with you about what is happening in Washington, D.C. and around the district.
I'd first like to say how pleased I am with the significant amount of work we've already been able to accomplish since being sworn in as a Member of the 112th Congress.
I'm particularly proud that the House successfully voted to repeal the massive entitlement program known as ObamaCare. Like I've said before, this is a bill that Americans did not ask for, do not need and cannot afford, and I'm glad that I had an opportunity to vote on repealing it. We also adopted a new rules package that will make Congress more open and transparent and makes spending cuts easier and spending hikes harder. We took a first step in cutting the deficit by passing a resolution that would reduce non-security spending to 2008 levels. And Congress voted to cut our own budget by 5%, because if we are serious about taking on spending, we are all going to have to make tough choices.
During the last two weeks, I also had an opportunity to spend time back home in the District, during which I kicked off the first part of my "Meet Your Member of Congress" listening tour. These events are designed to allow me to meet with constituents in order to share thoughts and address issues that are important to Tennessee's Fourth Congressional District. We held events in Winchester, Tullahoma, Lynnville, Lawrenceburg, Centerville and Pikeville, and I'm thankful for the warm reception and the great input that I received at each location.
Additionally, we have been very busy setting up our offices set up in Washington, DC, Columbia and Crossville, and should be opening the doors to our district offices within the next week.
We sent out our first E-Newsletter on Monday, February 8th, where we asked people to send in photos to be used for our Web site. We've already received numerous submissions and we are in the process of getting them posted to our site. If you have any photos that you would like to see included, please send them to TN04Media@mail.house.gov.
Finally, please be sure you are following my office on Facebook and Twitter. We update both of these sites throughout the day and include timely information on important events. These sites are an excellent way for me to hear from you on how you feel about particular issues, so please feel free to post a message on my Facebook page or send out a Tweet using "@DesJarlaisTN04".
Thank you for the privilege of allowing me to serve as your Member of Congress. I look forward to continuing the conversation with you on how we can change government. If you have any ideas for the blog, please email your suggestions to TN04Media@mail.house.gov
