Rohrabacher Votes "No" on Patriot Act Extensions

Statement

Date: Feb. 8, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) issued the following statement regarding his "no" vote on H.R. 514, a bill that reauthorizes three expiring provisions of the USA Patriot Act and the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act (IRTPA) until December 8, 2011:

"There are many issues that are involved with the extraordinary powers granted to the federal government under the Patriot Act," said Rohrabacher. " I believe it's time to individually debate those issues, including the provisions that have been permanently extended, not just continue to renew the powers that have sunsets.

"Our goal has to be the security of the people of the United States but at the same time we must be protective of our individual freedoms which are dependent upon keeping control and limiting the powers of our own government."

In December 2005, Rep. Rohrabacher voted against permanent police powers granted under the PATRIOT Act Conference Report which passed the House.
