Sen. Portman's Response On Local Cincinnati Impact Of President Obama's Proposed Budget

Statement

Date: Feb. 14, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), former director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget and a member of the Senate Budget Committee, expressed concerns today over the lack of funding for critical projects provided in President Obama's budget proposal, such as the Joint Strike Fighter alternative second engine.

"The Joint Strike Fighter alternative second engine provides needed competition, forcing companies to develop a better product at a lower cost, which will save taxpayers money in the long run and ensure our men and women in uniform have the best equipment possible. The Government Accountability Office believes that the competition on the JSF engine will lead to savings that would total to more than $20 billion over the life of the JSF program. Historically, competition in major weapons programs leads to better results. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will work with Speaker Boehner, other members of the Ohio delegation and the Administration to ensure that the needed funding is maintained."

Sen. Portman will continue to fight on the side of the taxpayer to ensure quality and competition remain at the forefront of technology development.
