Senator Toomey on Spending Cuts in House Continuing Resolution

Press Release

Date: Feb. 10, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) issued the following statement today regarding the U.S. House of Representatives' proposed continuing resolution:

"I commend the members of the House for forcing appropriators back to the drawing board to cut spending even more. This is what we need right now. These cuts are what I and 10 of my Senate colleagues asked Speaker John Boehner to do last week, and I reiterated this message yesterday to members of the Republican Study Committee," Sen. Toomey said. "With a $1.5 trillion deficit and 9 percent unemployment, we've got to make tough choices to put our economy back on the right path to create jobs. Members of Congress are starting to come to grips with our financial problems, including Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, a Democrat, who announced last week that he won't allow any earmarks in fiscal year 2011 and 2012 appropriations bills. This is also an encouraging first step, one I've urged Congress to adopt for many years, and I hope to see this attitude spread on Capitol Hill."
