Price Supports Efforts of First Ever National School Choice Week

Statement

Date: Jan. 27, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) issued the following statement recognizing the first ever National School Choice Week. In the spirit of this week's important recognition, yesterday Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) along with Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) introduced the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results (SOAR) Act that would reauthorize the successful and popular D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP). This program provides scholarships for low-income students in Washington, DC to attend a private school of their parent's choice.

"When it comes to selecting the best education for their children, parents should have as much choice and flexibility as possible," said Chairman Price. "The movement to embrace school choice is fundamental to our belief that parents know best what their children need and that the government should not try to limit opportunities by insisting on a one-size-fits all scenario. Speaker Boehner and Senator Lieberman should be commended for taking up the banner of school choice by fighting to restore the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program. Their efforts and those of Americans all across the country who are celebrating the first ever National School Choice Week are doing invaluable service to current and future generations of American students. This action will shed light on the continued need to fight for quality education, choice, and opportunity for American families."
