HEADLINE: REMARKS BY REPRESENTATIVE BENNIE THOMPSON (D-MS); AND MAYA ANGELOU, FORMER POET LAUREATE OF THE UNITED STATES AT THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

BODY:

REP. THOMPSON: "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer; it sings because it has a song." It's my honor tonight to introduce the author of these words, an amazing woman of sterling character, sound mind and a warm heart who needs no introduction: Dr. Maya Angelou, truly one of the greatest poets of the last century. (Cheers, applause.) Dr. Angelou's words have given voice to the mute, zeal to the complacent, and comfort to the forlorn.

Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming the former poet laureate of the United States, Dr. Maya Angelou. (Cheers, applause.)
