Kildee Statement on State of the Union

Statement

Date: Jan. 25, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Education

Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) released the following statement in response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address:

"This evening, the President laid out his plan to continue the fight to rebuild our economy, improve education for our children, and move our country forward in a fiscally responsible way.

I completely agree with the President that job creation is priority number one. While our economy is showing signs of improvement, there are still too many families in my district and across the country for whom the recovery is not happening quickly or vigorously enough. I stand with the President in the fight to support American firms and domestic manufacturing to help grow the economy and bring well-paying jobs to our communities.

The President also rightly noted the connection between education and economic opportunity and I applaud his commitment to improving our nation's education system. Academic success moves our entire society forward by ensuring that America's workforce can meet current and future challenges. In order to achieve academic success as a nation, quality affordable education must be available to all our students. As Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education I will continue my work to improve education for America's children and ensure America continues to lead the world in innovation.

As we move forward with these important initiatives for our country, I believe we must be cognizant of the debt future generations will inherit unless we change our spending habits. At a time when American families are tightening their belts, the federal government should be no exception and I am encouraged by the President's plan for a five year freeze on all non-security, discretionary spending. This plan will help grow our economy and improve our country while exercising sound fiscal judgment and responsibility.

I join the President in his commitment to the American people and I look forward to working with him on these important initiatives for our country."
