Middle Class Tax Cuts

"In today's economy middle class families are struggling and deserve immediate tax cuts to help pay for health care, child care, and education." - Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Senator

New York families pay some of the highest taxes in the country, and Senator Gillibrand pledges to work hard to reduce that burden. She has sponsored and supported legislation to provide tax cuts to help pay for college, reduce the costs of child care, and allow individuals to deduct their property taxes from their federal income taxes.

Protecting New York's Middle Class From AMT

Senator Gillibrand is committed to preserving existing middle class tax cuts, including the child tax credit. She will work to protect middle class families from the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). Since the AMT was never indexed to inflation, New Yorkers with an income as low as $40,000 a year could be affected this year.

Making Tax Relief A Priority

In the House of Representatives and Senate, Senator Gillibrand has advocated for tax relief aimed at New York's middle class, including:

* Introducing The Family Care Act of 2007 to expand the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit for middle class families, which will help families afford the cost of child care;
* Introducing The College Affordability Tax Relief Act, which will provide middle class families with a $10,000 tax deduction on tuition expenses;
* Cosponsoring The Property Tax Relief Act, which would allow homeowners who do not itemize their taxes (about 40 percent of the population) to deduct their property taxes from their federal income tax;
* Voting six times to patch the AMT to prevent it from hitting middle class taxpayers; and
* Voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which cuts taxes by about $800 for millions of New York families.
