Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement following the ruling of Judge Henry E. Hudson of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia regarding the individual coverage requirement in the Affordable Care Act:
"I disagree with the ruling issued today in Virginia that finds part of the Affordable Care Act to be unconstitutional. Opponents of reform have filed more than 20 legal challenges, the majority of which have already been summarily dismissed. Additionally, two federal courts have issued thoughtful rulings finding that the Affordable Care Act is indeed constitutional. There will undoubtedly be more challenges to reform. However, I am confident that health insurance reform will continue on its course and that its constitutionality will be upheld in subsequent courts so that Americans will continue to reap the benefits of reform."
