Rep. Waxman supports a strong system of bilateral and multilateral sanctions to pressure Iran to end its pursuit of a nuclear program. He is alarmed by the Iranian regime's refusal to abide by United Nations demands to suspend its nuclear enrichment activities and cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The threat posed by a nuclear Iran is only underscored by Iranian President Ahmadinejad's extreme and violent rhetoric towards the United States, Israel, and the West. Rep. Waxman is hopeful that the Obama Administration's efforts to engage in direct talks with Iran will advance a peaceful resolution to tensions with Iran.
