Issue Position: Abortion - Taxpayer Funded Abortion

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2011
Issues: Abortion

Prior to the implementation of H.R. 3590, the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act," federal law restricted the use of federal funds for abortion to cases of rape, incest, or if the life or well-being of the mother is threatened. However, on March 23, 2010, the President signed H.R. 3590 into law which does not prohibit federal funding for abortions. The health care reconciliation bill that became law a week later failed to reinstate this funding restriction. Additionally, President Obama's Executive Order claiming to restrict federal funding for abortions is loosely enforceable and easily overturned. The problems with the provisions in the health care bill cannot be reversed through an Executive Order but require a legislative fix that must be enacted by Congress and approved by the President.

I strongly believe that it is our moral and ethical duty to protect the dignity of human life, particularly when it comes to the lives of the most vulnerable members of the human race. This is one of the reasons why I voted against the health care bill and will never support legislation that increases access and availability of abortions, especially when it would be funded by American taxpayer dollars. I remain adamantly opposed to federally funded abortions, and I will continue to fight for legislation that amends the health care bill and protects those that do not, yet, have a voice in our democracy.
