A Pledge to Louisiana

Statement

Dear Friend,

Yesterday, the direction of Congress shifted dramatically, a direct result of the power of the people and our democracy. In November, Americans made their way to the polls to send a message that they were tired of out-of-control spending, tired of a government that did not heed their wishes, tired of the agenda that Speaker Pelosi and President Obama had been pushing over the past two years. We embark in that new direction today, and will work diligently and tirelessly to ensure that the wishes of the American people are acted upon.

Throughout the campaign, Republicans across the country promised to listen to the people and bring real change to Washington. Now that we have achieved a majority in Congress, we have a great responsibility to uphold these promises to our constituents across the country. All bills in this new Congress must include a statement of constitutional authority, and must be posted online and be available for the public to read three days before the House votes.

The tasks we face are daunting. In the coming weeks, we must tackle the budget, restore jobs, rebuild our reputation abroad and set the country back on the right path. This will not be an easy job, especially with opposition from the Democratic controlled Senate and White House, but we will work tirelessly to listen to the wishes of the American people.

I have worked hard to represent Southwest Louisiana in Washington, serving as your voice during some of the state's most trying periods in recent history, including Hurricanes Rita, Gustav and Ike, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and subsequent moratorium. I have been at the forefront of the fight to ensure that Louisiana recovers after the storms, and that jobs and energy production are restored after the oil spill and moratorium. I have been and will continue to be a leader in the House in favor of coastal restoration and harbor maintenance, two issues of utmost importance to Louisiana. I will continue this fight in Washington throughout the next two years, and I am confident that we will be able to deliver real change to the way we do business in the Capitol.

Today, members of the 112th Congress will read the US Constitution in its entirety on the floor of the House of Representatives. This gesture should remind all members of Congress that their authority to govern is given by the people. I look forward to ensuring that these principles echo throughout this session, and I promise to continue to serve the people of Southwest Louisiana.

Sincerely,

Charles W. Boustany, Jr. M.D.
Member of Congress
