Rep. Corrine Brown Continues Advocacy Work to Better Conditions for Sanford Housing Authority Residents

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Corrine Brown made the following statement:

"As we begin the New Year, I remain extremely focused on ensuring that the residents living in the public housing properties managed by the Sanford Housing Authority are taken care of. I want to applaud the Obama administration, as well as South East HUD Regional Administrator, Ed Jennings, for staying on top of this issue and responding in a timely fashion to the very serious issues confronting the Sanford Housing Authority and the residents that live there. Vivian Bryant, President and CEO of the Orlando Housing Authority and temporary SHA Director, who I met with just yesterday, has been an outstanding addition to SHA, and has worked extremely hard and contributed tremendously to the overhaul necessary at the various complexes.

For me, the number one priority is ensuring that the residents are safe, looked after and living in decent, clean and livable facilities. The families and senior citizens residing there deserve more than to be living in sub-human conditions, wherein residents are faced with rodent and insect infestation, mold, and non functioning heating and air conditioning units, just to name a few. I have held numerous town hall meetings with the residents at the various facilities, and in 2011, I will continue to advocate on their behalf and work with key members of the Housing and Urban Development Agency, as well as the local agencies here in Florida, to place the residents in decent housing first and foremost, and afterwards, to work towards the demolition of the existing units."
