Senator Boxer: Major Project to Create Jobs in San Francisco

Statement

Date: Dec. 14, 2010

Dear Friend:

I want to be sure you heard the good news about an exciting project that will create more than a thousand new jobs in San Francisco.

Last week, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) broke ground on the seismic upgrade and renovation of the historic Federal Building at 50 United Nations Plaza. This project, which according to GSA will create or save 1,300 jobs, is being funded with a $122 million investment from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The 50 UN Plaza building was designed by Arthur Brown Jr., architect of San Francisco's City Hall, Opera House, and Veterans Building. The current project includes historic renovation, seismic retrofit, and interior reconfiguration of the existing spaces. GSA will move into the building from its current headquarters at 450 Golden Gate Avenue in early 2014.

Renovation of this San Francisco landmark will lead to additional economic growth in and around UN Plaza while helping to revitalize the entire Central Market neighborhood. This project is yet another example of how the Recovery Act has saved and created jobs while providing much-needed improvements to our nation's infrastructure.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer
