Statement by HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan on Congressional Passage of Important Legislation to Improve Housing for the Elderly and Persons with Disabilities

Today the U.S. House of Representatives joined the U.S. Senate in passing the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Act and the Frank Melville Supportive Housing Act. These two bills will make a variety of improvements to HUD's existing supportive housing programs for extremely low-income senior citizens and persons with disabilities. The following is a statement was released today by HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan:

"I am immensely pleased that members of Congress came together in a spirit of bipartisanship to approve these two important pieces of legislation.

"This Administration is committed to making sure our senior citizens and persons with disabilities have every opportunity to live in decent and affordable homes. The new improvements approved by Congress means these programs will not only continue to provide for these housing needs, but will make this vital assistance even more effective.

"I am grateful to the members of Congress who worked diligently on these bills, specifically Senators Herb Kohl, Robert Menendez, and Mike Johanns, as well as Representative Christopher Murphy."
