Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) released the following statement upon learning of the arrest of 14 students at Palm Desert High School after an undercover investigation into campus drug sales:
"This situation is a stark example that substance abuse continues to threaten our children and teens. Prescription drug abuse, in particular, is considered our nation's fastest growing drug problem.
"Just this week the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) released its Monitoring the Future Study that shows 1 in 20 teens continue to abuse OxyContin and also shows increases in marijuana and ecstasy usage among teens. Prescription drug abuse is a real threat among our nation's youth. I commend the faculty of Palm Desert High School, the Desert Sands Unified School District Board Members, and our local law enforcement agencies for their work.
"We all need to give our children the support and tools needed to fight back against this epidemic. The first step in addressing addiction is admitting you have a problem. Thanks to the actions of these local leaders, we may be taking that first step."
