Rep. Judy Chu Issues Statement on House DADT Vote

Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., issued the following statement as the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to repeal the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.

"Since Don't Ask Don't Tell, 13,000 soldiers have been discharged for no other reason than their sexual orientation," said Chu. "It has cost the US over $360 million to replace these soldiers, an utter waste of dollars and talent. That's why I've stopped calling this policy "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and instead labeled it what it really is: "Doesn't Work, Never Has.'"

"Let's stop this misguided policy from hurting countless men and women who serve our country. Our country should praise the men and women who keep us safe -- not persecute them. "

Representative Judy Chu is a longtime supporter of equal rights for every American and was recently awarded a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign for her work in the 111th Congress. She was elected in July 2009 to the U.S. House of Representatives as the Representative of California's 32nd District, which includes East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. She is a member of the House Judiciary, Government Oversight, and Education and Labor Committees.

Congresswoman Chu's career in politics spans 24 years. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics.
