HOEFFEL STATEMENT ON HANDOVER OF AUTHORITY IN IRAQ

Ambler, PA (June 28, 2004) - U.S. Rep. Joe Hoeffel (PA-13) today released the following statement on the U.S.-led coalition transfer of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government.

"Today is an historic day in Iraq, but we must keep in mind that this is just another step on the long road toward security and stability in Iraq and the ultimate goal of a free and democratic society.

"I congratulate our troops for their fortitude and bravery in bringing the situation in Iraq to this important crossroad. We are ever mindful of the sacrifices our brave men and women have made and will continue to make as we move forward on this perilous, but necessary journey.

"I also salute the courage of the members of the Iraqi interim government, especially Prime Minister Alawi and President Al-Yawer, and wish them well as they attempt to effectively bridge the dangerous ground between today and that day when free elections are held in Iraq.

"Having reached this critical point, the Bush Administration must now work effectively and quickly to obtain more international support for the interim government and the coalition forces so that security is restored to Iraq and the United States does not continue to bear the overwhelming financial and human burden."
